The well-known gardener Oktyabrina Ganichkina has been sharing her experience in growing vegetables for many years. In the spring, gardeners are most often interested in picking seedlings and feeding them.

Tomato dive top tips:

  • Ganichkina recommends diving twice for tomato seedlings. This will help to avoid stretching the bushes and form a powerful root. This is true for growing tomatoes in the central zone, when planting in open ground is possible only in June.
  • The first transplant is carried out at stage 1-2 of this leaf in small pots with a volume of 200-300 ml.
  • Before diving, tomatoes are abundantly watered with complex top dressing for Agricola seedlings.
  • Water temperature for watering seedlings should be at room temperature. From too warm water, heat-loving tomatoes are very drawn out.
  • Ganichkina recommends taking purchased good quality soil especially for tomato seedlings or universal soil.

First pick

  1. Pour the earth mixture into the pot and push the hole through with a stick.
  2. Moisten the soil abundantly with the same water with top dressing.
  3. Using a stick or fingers, gently pry the bush out of the seedling box and transfer it to the pot without disturbing the earthy coma.
  4. Dig the tomato with your fingers to the middle of the stem and gently press the soil around the root.
  5. After 2 weeks, the plants need to be fed with Agricola for seedlings or other complex mineral fertilizer.

Second pick

The second dive is carried out in 3-4 weeks.

Two hours before transplanting, cut off 2-3 lower leaves with scissors, leaving small stumps. With each picking of tomatoes, Ganichkina recommends deepening the bushes to form new lateral roots. To prevent the leaves from rotting in the soil, they are removed.

It is better to take pots with a volume of 2-2.5 liters. You can plant 1-2 bushes in each.

  • Pour a handful of potting mix into the bottom.
  • Plants are taken out of small pots carefully, preserving the root system if possible, and placed in a new pot.
  • The tomato root is gradually sprinkled and crushed with a hand until the pot is filled by ⅔.
  • There should be room in the pot for future soil addition.
  • The transplanted seedlings are watered with settled water at room temperature.

After 2 weeks, pour the soil mixture, leaving 2-3 cm from the top edge of the pot. Tomatoes are fed with "Agricola" with a small addition of an organic mixture (Humate or similar). It is useful to additionally carry out foliar top dressing with the same composition. Spraying each bush, on the advice of Ganichkina, it is better to start from the underside of the leaves.

Preparing for transplanting into open ground

Preparation for transplanting Oktyabrina Ganichkina recommends starting with hardening seedlings. When the temperature outside rises above 14-15 ⁰C during the day, pots of tomatoes can be taken out to the open balcony for a while. It is better to cover the first days of the plant with a thin covering material so that there is no burn from direct sunlight.

One week before the planned planting in the ground, tomatoes need to be fed with complex mineral fertilizers. It is useful to treat tomatoes with Bud, this stimulates abundant flowering.

The day before transplanting into the ground, cut off the lower 1-2 leaves, freeing the stem for deepening. "Wounds" should have time to weather before contact with the ground to prevent rotting. If two bushes grew in a pot, they can be carefully separated. Or so plant in pairs, but when tying the bushes to the support, form a little sideways from each other.

After planting, it is advisable to cover the tomatoes with plastic wrap for the first time until stable warm and dry weather is established.
