Cherry Standard Ural: variety description and history, features of planting and care
Anonim

Gardeners in Russia, especially in its northern regions, are faced with the problem of finding a frost-resistant variety that can produce a stable crop. This problem is relevant not only for the north of the country, but also for most of the central regions, where the weather does not indulge in warm winters. Breeders involved in breeding new varieties presented cherry lovers with a gift called the Standard of the Urals. What are the advantages of Standard Ural cherries, and how to grow them, we will find out below.

Origin story

"Parents" of the Ural Standard are seedlings of steppe and shrub cherries.It was they who served as the basis for a new, frost-resistant variety, which appeared thanks to the efforts of breeders Gvozdyukova N.I. and Zhukov S.V., who at that time worked at the Ural Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture and the CGL. Their offspring turned out to be frost-resistant, with good immunity from diseases and pests, and also taste good.

Variety description

Cherry Standard Ural turned out to be a successful experiment, which was loved not only by local gardeners, but also received recognition in other regions of the country. Has the following characteristics:

  1. The average height of a bush is 1.7 meters.
  2. The branches are strong, weaving into a wide, sparse crown.
  3. Cherries are large, fleshy. The mass of one cherry is 5 grams.
  4. Cannot self-pollinate, requiring other cherry varieties to be planted on site. Suitable for this: Volzhanka, Vole Michurin, Mayak.
  5. From one bush, on average, from 6 to 15 kilograms of crops are harvested. It all depends on care and weather conditions.
  6. The bush practically does not need pruning. All work comes down to the removal of dried branches and rare correction of neglected areas.
  7. Weakly susceptible to fungal diseases and insect pest attacks.
  8. The berries tolerate transportation well without losing their attractive appearance.

Agree that such a description of the variety inspires confidence and arouses the desire to grow a couple of bushes on the site.

Pay attention! The culture, due to the use of steppe varieties as the basis for breeding, grows with bushes, not trees.

Planting and care

Landing is as follows:

  1. Pits are being dug, the width and depth of which is 70 centimeters.
  2. The distance between the holes is at least two meters.
  3. The bottom of each hole is covered with a layer of fine gravel.
  4. Further, the pit is filled up to half of its volume with earth mixed with fertilizers.
  5. A wooden peg is driven into the ground.
  6. A cherry seedling is carefully placed in the prepared hole.
  7. Fill the hole with the remaining mixture of earth and fertilizer, then tie the cherry to the peg.

Cherry care consists of the following steps:

  1. Watering - medium intensity. Do not flood the plant or overdry the ground. A few days before the harvest, the bushes are not watered.
  2. Fertilize the soil preferably with manure or mineral-based fertilizers.
  3. Pruning is carried out in the first month of spring, if necessary.
  4. In late autumn and early summer, cover the main branches of the bush with whitewash, and in winter shovel more snow around the bushes. Such actions will help the culture to endure the winter in comfortable conditions.

Pros and cons

Has both positive and negative sides. Pros include:

  • frost resistance;
  • pleasant taste with slight acidity;
  • disease resistance.

Cons:

  • is used as a basis for compotes, blanks and various kinds of tinctures. Less commonly used raw;
  • need other varieties for pollination;
  • begins to bear fruit no earlier than 3 years after planting.

Diseases and pests

Does not have a predisposition to any diseases and pests, as a result, rare preventive examinations are enough to maintain a he althy state. Occasionally, bushes can be treated with special preparations, which will further increase the immune defense of the plant.
