Potatoes are an essential part of any diet. Any hostess will appreciate potatoes that do not darken after cooking, have a short growing season, which the Timo potato variety has.

Variety description

Timo potatoes are early maturing varieties. The yield per 1 ha is up to 50 centners. The collection of young potatoes begins already 50 days after direct planting. This variety is table. Timo potatoes are subject to all types of heat treatment, they are quickly boiled soft. His homeland is Finland.

Due to its high starch content, Timo is suitable for making quality starch. The variety has an unlimited shelf life. It is resistant to such dangerous plant diseases as black leg, scab, tuber cancer.

Timo hankkiyan's potato during growth forms a small sprawling bush that requires hilling. The green mass of shoots is relatively low. The leaves on the shoots are light green. The inflorescences of this variety are small, they are pale blue or light purple.

After 50 days of active development, delicious fruits ripen: tubers of a light yellow hue with a white tone, weighing from 70 to 120 g. It has increased palatability, has a sweetish aftertaste. The general description of the variety contains all the most important characteristics.

Boarding rules

Very often, low yields of a variety are associated with improper preparation before planting. Seed samples of Timo are prepared about a full month before planting in the ground. Prepare material for planting as follows:

  • Select he althy potatoes.
  • Seed is being calibrated for size and weight.
  • Large tubers are cut for planting.
  • Produced sprouting and heating of tubers.
  • Selected specimens are processed with a solution of useful microfertilizers and special means.

Also prepared samples are treated with ash to increase yield and economic efficiency.

Growing

Grow this variety of potato in the same way as all the others. To get a good harvest of delicious potatoes, choose high-quality seed from trusted manufacturers. Sprouted potatoes are used as planting material, the variety is grown exclusively in open ground, depending on weather conditions, they are planted in the soil in April-May.

The depth of embedding is shallow - only 5 cm, for this reason soil hilling is required. Planting of this variety is performed as follows:

  • In the fall, they prepare the site by digging up the soil, introducing nutritious manure. Useful mineral compounds are introduced during the direct planting of selected potatoes.
  • Holes are formed with a shovel, keeping a distance of 30-40 cm between them.

When planting tubers, form ridges, they are necessary for reliable protection from the harmful rays of the sun. From the direct sun, unprotected potatoes can simply turn green and bake.

Features of care

When giving preference to these varieties of potatoes, remember the important rules of care, following which a good harvest is obtained.Timo's main irrigation method is uniform drip irrigation. So the plant is watered directly under the root, the consumption of irrigation water is reduced, and the daily efficiency increases significantly.

Do not forget about periodic loosening of the soil so that the roots breathe and develop properly. Timely spraying from dangerous pests and diseases: the Colorado potato beetle, late blight will save the future crop.

In order to increase yields and accelerate growth, the plant is fed with a nutrient solution of liquid manure. For feeding potatoes, stinging nettles that have rotted in water are used. For this purpose, 10 kg of fresh nettles are taken, finely chopped, placed in a 100-liter barrel of water for a week. After manipulation, a bucket of liquid manure is added to the composition, 1 liter of liquid is poured under each bush. Timo also needs to be fed at the stage of bud formation, in this case, 1 liter of water mixed with ash is added. Ash is added in 1 cup to 1 bucket of water. The third time the nutrient composition is applied during the active flowering of the bud in the form of liquid manure.

Provide Timo potatoes with moderate watering as the lower leaves of the bush wither. Watered with water heated to 20 degrees. During the period of active flowering, it needs abundant watering.

Important! You need to water the shoots in the evening so that the moisture from the leaves has time to dry.

It also requires periodic loosening of the soil to a depth of 2-3 cm, do it carefully so as not to damage the tubers. To get rid of weeds, the soil around the bush is mulched. Hilling is done to provide oxygen to the roots and prevent late blight.

Advantages and visible disadvantages

This variety has the following positive characteristics:

  • High yields.
  • Excellent taste.
  • Resistant to drought and excess moisture.
  • Cancer resistant.
  • Short period of full maturation - 50-70 days.
  • Large tubers are resistant to various mechanical damage.
  • The best option for natural growing in non-standard conditions.

Despite a lot of advantages, Timo tubers have a couple of disadvantages:

  • mature potatoes sprout quickly when stored at home.
  • Reduced resistance to common late blight and nematode.
  • Responds to a cold snap during planting, resulting in lower yields.

Pests and diseases

This variety of potato tubers is resistant to various kinds of diseases with proper care. It is resistant to cancer, scab, black leg and dangerous rhizoctoniosis. But tubers are susceptible to such a disease as late blight.

Tubers have increased resistance to harmful viral diseases in the form of foliage curl and a dangerous strain of the “M” group, so periodic renewal of seed material is not required. Finnish Timo potatoes hardly degenerate.

In order not to attack the Colorado potato beetle, potatoes are sprayed with a natural solution of ash. Watering the bushes with this solution will help to avoid dangerous rotting in wet weather. Planting fragrant mustard, beautiful calendula, and various legumes around resistant potatoes will help protect ripened fruits from the attack of a dangerous wireworm.

Garlic infusion relieves late blight, for this, 200 g of garlic are crushed, poured with water, insisted for a fortress for 2 days, bred in a bucket, then the shoots are watered. The procedure is carried out every 10 days.

Harvest and storage of crops

To keep the tubers as long as possible, it is important to choose the right room for it. The room must be dry, well ventilated and free from sunlight. The optimum temperature for storing potatoes is +4-6 degrees.

Agronomists store tubers in specially prepared vegetable stores, and gardeners in cellars or heaps. When stored in the cellar, it is important that the tubers do not lie on the ground; wooden boxes or nets are made for them. To store potatoes, special recesses are made in the ground, heaps filled with tubers and covered with straw, buried in the ground. This method preserves the harvest for a long time.
