Starkrimson pear: variety description and characteristics, cultivation and care
Old varieties of pears, thanks to their excellent characteristics, still compete with new varieties. One such variety is the Starkrimson pear. Consider its description, pros and cons, features of cultivation. How to plant and care for it, how to protect it from diseases and pests. How and when to harvest fruits and save them.
History of selection
Cultivar Starcrimson is the result of a free mutation of the well-known variety Clapp's Favorite. The plant appeared in 1939 in Michigan. Its main difference from the original variety is the red color of the fruit.Starkrimson was registered in 1956 by Stark Brothers Nursery.
Description and characteristics of Starkrimson variety
Tree above average or tall in height, crown of pyramidal type, sprawling, leafy branches. Fruiting on a wild pear rootstock begins in the 7th year, on quince - in the 5th. The yield grows gradually, the tree bears fruit steadily only after 10 years of life. The average fruit harvest is 30 kg per tree.
Starkrimson blooms in mid-late time. Requires pollinators, the same varieties are suitable as for Clapp's Favorite: Bere, Dessertnaya, Williams, Tavricheskaya.
Fruits ripen in summer, large, 185-285 g each. The shape of pears is classic, the skin of unripe fruits is yellow, with a red blush. Ripe fruits are red. Inside they are white, juicy, the flesh is soft, sour-sweet. Pears of the summer variety are stored for a short time, only 1 month. Transportability is average.
Pros and cons
Pear Growing Nuances
Pear needs to find a suitable place to land. Then prepare the seedling and plant it correctly. The development and even fruiting of the tree depends on how correctly the planting is carried out.
Site selection and soil preparation
The Starkrimson pear variety does not tolerate autumn and spring frosts, the change of thaws and cold snaps in winter, so it should be planted in the sunniest and warmest area, under the protection of buildings and fences.
Grows well in loose, moist, fertile soil. Before preparing the landing hole, it is dug up, leveled. A hole is made 0.7 m wide and deep, drainage is poured onto the bottom, then a mixture of excavated earth, humus and ash (1 to 1) is poured.
Seedling selection and preparation
Pear seedlings of 1-2 years of age take root best of all. They are planted early in the spring or in the middle of autumn, in the first case, the buds should not yet bloom on the plant, in the second, the leaves should fall off. The bark on the trunk and branches should be smooth, elastic, without damage, disease.
The day before planting, pear roots are soaked in a root stimulant solution. After processing, cut off the tips of the roots (if they are dry), branches and the central conductor by 1/3 of the length.
Seating algorithm
1-1.5 buckets of water are poured into a prepared hole. When it is absorbed, the roots of the seedling are lowered into the middle, covered with earth above the root neck, but below the graft. Lightly tamp the soil, water again and cover the near-stem circle with mulch.
Further crop care
The Starkrimson variety is considered unpretentious, but demanding on the agricultural technology of fruit crops.
Mulching soil
Laying a mulching layer prevents the soil above the root system from drying out and compacting. As a result, the number of waterings is reduced, there is no need to loosen and weed the plant. This saves time and energy for garden maintenance. Mulch is laid immediately after planting, then changed 2 times a year - in spring and autumn.
Irrigation
Before rooting, the first 2 months, the tree is watered every week, if the summer is hot, in the first 2-3 years it is watered abundantly until autumn. Mature trees are watered during drought and during fruiting. For every sq. m. of the area occupied by pears spend at least 2-3 buckets of water.
Fertilizer
In the first season, the seedling is not fertilized. All subsequent years, fertilizers are applied in the spring, before the start of the growing season, after flowering is completed and during the period of fruit formation. Starkrimson can be fertilized with both organic and mineral fertilizers. In the spring, nitrogen-containing fertilizers are applied, in subsequent times - phosphorus-potassium.
Circumcision
Pruning is done in the spring, before the leaves bloom, or in the fall, after they fall. Dry, diseased, fruit-bearing and simply superfluous shoots growing inward are cut off. The formation of the crown has been going on for several years. To reduce the height of the tree, it is preferable to form a cupped crown.
Pests and diseases
Starkrimson's resistance to scab is above average. A tree can be affected by fungal and bacterial diseases, especially often this happens with poor care, with improper or untimely pruning. Preventive measures - preventive spraying with fungicides before the period of possible spread of diseases. If signs of infection appear, spray with drugs in a therapeutic dose.
The pear gall mite is considered to be a pest of Starkrimson. Ways of control and prevention - spraying a tree with an insecticide.
Collection and storage
Starkrimson pear ripens in the summer, at the end of July. As soon as the fruits are ripe, they need to be collected so that they do not crumble. The harvested fruits are not stored for a long time, mainly they are consumed fresh or processed, making homemade preparations. Those that are left for storage are placed in a cold and dark room. Shelf life - 1 month.
The Starkrimson Pear is similar in characteristics and taste to its parent - Clapp's Favorite. Grows in all climatic zones. Suitable for cultivation in household plots. The technology of cultivation and care does not differ from the requirements of most crop varieties.
