Gooseberry Serenade: variety description and characteristics, planting and care rules
The gooseberry variety Serenada was bred from varieties Captivator 0-271 and Besshipny 3, registered in the State Register in 2004. Zoned in the Central Black Earth region. Consider the characteristics of the variety, the pros and cons, how to properly plant and grow plants, how to care for the crop, cut and cook for the winter. How to protect against disease and when to harvest.
Description and characteristics of the gooseberry Serenade
Serenade is a late ripening variety. Berries of universal purpose, suitable for processing and eating fresh.The plant is tall, slightly sprawling. Branches of medium length, young green, without pubescence. Spines solitary, sparse, light. They are located on the underside of the shoots. The leaves of the gooseberry are light green, medium in size.
Inflorescences 1- and 2-flowered. The flowers are light, rather large, the ovary is slightly pubescent. Serenade's berries are of an interesting shape - elongated-conical or pear-shaped, with a skin of medium thickness, sparse pubescence, purple-red color. There are few seeds. The taste is sweet and sour, the average weight is 4 g. The average yield is 3.6 kg per plant. Serenade is resistant to drought and cold, relatively resistant to American powdery mildew.
Good and bad sides
Serenade Grade Virtues:
- large-fruited;
- rare spikes;
- resistance to cold and water scarcity;
- high productivity;
- berries transportability.
Disadvantages: In wet years with poor care, powdery mildew is more likely.
Rules for growing varieties
Serenade gooseberry seedlings are planted on the site in the spring, until the buds have blossomed on them, and in the fall, after all the leaves have fallen. Strong 1-2-year-old seedlings are suitable for propagation, with several lignified shoots and strong roots. A sunny place is chosen for planting, in the shade the bushes form small berries. Shrubs should not be planted in constantly wet lowlands and heavy clay soil.
Planting pattern: at least 1 m in rows and 1.5 m between rows. In each hole, it is worth adding 1 bucket of rotted compost, 50 g of superphosphate and potassium sulfate, mineral fertilizers can be replaced with 0.5 kg of ash. Add sand to clay soil.
Planting a gooseberry is simple: water the hole, lower the gooseberry 5 cm below the root neck and sprinkle with earth, then compact it a little and cover with mulch. Cut shoots to a height of 50-60 cm.
Further crop care
Serenade variety needs care, including watering, feeding, forming a bush and sheltering it for the winter.
Irrigation and fertilization
After planting, pour at least 5 liters of water under each seedling 2 times a week. After rooting, water no more than 1 time per week. You can not leave the earth dry for a long time or, conversely, water it.
Feed the bushes for the first time after planting next spring. Mature plants that are already bearing fruit are fertilized 3 times before the end of fruiting: before the foliage blooms, after the end of flowering and after the berries have reached half the size.It is best to fertilize with organic matter and ash in the form of infusions or simply sprinkle dry under the bushes and water.
Pruning and shaping the bush
Each bush should be formed from 4-6 fruiting shoots and the same number of young ones to replace. Every year you need to inspect the bushes and cut out old, diseased, broken, frost-damaged branches. Gooseberry Serenade is rejuvenated when it is 10 years old: all lignified shoots are cut out, except for young and strong ones.
Wintering
In autumn, after the foliage has fallen from the shrub, pruning should be done, water the soil if there is no rain, and cover the root zone with a layer of straw, tree foliage 10 cm. In cold regions, branches should also be protected: tie together and cover with a cover from agrofibre.Remove old mulch in spring.
Diseases and pests
This variety may be affected by American powdery mildew; less common than this disease, but also possible - mosaic, goblet rust and anthracnose. Spray plants with suitable fungicides at the first sign of disease, unless preventive treatment has been done. At least 2 treatments are required to kill fungus.
After pruning, all branches must be taken out and burned, the ashes should be used as fertilizer. You also need to weed weeds, on which pests often breed. Gooseberry Serenade can infect moths and shoot aphids, for the destruction of which insecticides are used. The drugs Fufanon and Actellik were recognized as effective.For processing, you need to choose products with a minimum waiting period so that you can safely harvest.
Cleaning and storage
Harvesting is carried out after the berries acquire the size and color characteristic of the variety. They need to be removed from the branches a little underripe if transportation or storage is required. Fully ripened berries are best suited for processing into blanks.
Store gooseberries in containers or plastic bags, closed with a lid and put in the refrigerator. In the cold, dry gooseberries are stored for about 2 weeks. Fruit should be transported in small containers so that they do not choke.
Serenade variety is one of the best late-ripening varieties of culture. Differs in large fruits which well maintain transportation and storage. Among the advantages of the variety, one can name a rare thorniness of shoots, which greatly facilitates the care of plants and especially harvesting.The variety attracts not only by the color of the skin, but also by the unusual shape of the fruit. It is cold-resistant and drought-resistant, therefore it can be grown in regions of the country with any climate.
