Raspberry Phenomenon: pruning and variety description and yield from one bush
Raspberry is a delicious aromatic berry with many he alth benefits. It is grown in almost every garden, trying to choose the best varieties zoned for specific climatic conditions. In order to ensure a stable harvest, various agrotechnical measures are needed, including pruning the Phenomenon raspberry variety. This berry has earned fame not only in Ukraine, but also in neighboring countries.
Description and characteristics of the variety
Raspberry Phenomenon was obtained by breeder Gonchar from crossing Odarka and Stolichnaya varieties in 1991. This is a semi-spreading bush with long, up to 3 meters, prickly shoots. They are painted in a pale brown color, turning yellow by the onset of autumn.
Leaves typical of raspberries: dark green above and with whitish pubescence below, unpaired pinnate, folded. Raspberries bloom in May with white flowers with yellow stamens, also characteristic of plants of this species.
In the first year after planting, the bush can produce rounded berries, which subsequently become cone-shaped. Their size is above average, weight ranges from 4.5 to 10 grams. They are distinguished by dense and juicy pulp with a delicate expressive aroma. There is a slight sourness, but the taste is harmonious.
The fruiting period falls on the end of June-July (depending on the region and weather conditions), the yield from one bush reaches 8 kilograms. The fruits tolerate transportation well.
Pros and cons
Raspberry variety Phenomenon has the following advantages:
- Cold resistance. This quality allows the plant to be cultivated in countries with different climates - from Ukraine to Russia.
- High drought tolerance. The bushes will give a harvest even in a dry year, but with an abundance of moisture, the berries will be large, and the harvest will be solid. The presence of sun and water has a positive effect on the taste characteristics of the Phenomenon.
- Excellent adaptability. The plant will bear fruit and grow even under not very favorable conditions.
- Significant survival rate of seedlings.
- Versatility of using berries. They are suitable for fresh consumption, freezing, and processing.
- Multi-disease resistant raspberries, pest resistance.
- Excellent appearance of berries, transportability, aroma (the presence of a strong smell is considered by some to be disadvantages).
- Stability of fruiting and abundant harvest.
These positive characteristics determined the popularity of Phenomenon raspberry among both professionals and amateurs. However, it also has some drawbacks:
- The bushes are prone to spider mite, raspberry beetle and weevil attacks.
- Intense berry aroma, although this property can hardly be considered a defect.
- Dependence of taste, size, quality and quantity of fruits on the properties and fertility of the soil, as well as the availability of watering, top dressing, weather conditions. In drought, the berries become smaller, become less juicy and tasty, there is a risk of crop shortage. The same happens on lean and dry soils.
- The need for a garter of long spiny shoots.
With proper agricultural technology and good care, the Phenomenon raspberry gives excellent yields of large, juicy, brightly colored berries.
Raspberry cultivation Phenomenon
In order for raspberries to grow successfully and give stable yields, it is necessary to provide them with care, watering, feeding and pruning. But the choice of planting material is more important.
The seedling must have powerful, formed and he althy roots, as well as at least three buds at the base of the shoot. This is important, as new fruit-bearing branches will grow from such buds next season.
Bushes are planted in fertile, fairly moist, but not wet soil. Phenomenon raspberries are grown in a separate plot with loose and nutritious soil, in sunny areas where a lot of snow accumulates in winter.
Care and trimming
Bushes are planted at the end of August-September, but the planting time depends on weather conditions.Long-acting mineral fertilizers and manure or humus are applied to each planting hole. Additives must be mixed with the soil. After planting, the berry bush is watered abundantly. Plants are planted at a distance of 60-80 centimeters from each other, as they grow strongly and dry the soil. Saplings are cut, leaving no more than 30 centimeters of branches. Leaves are being removed.
Rooted plants are watered abundantly at least three times next year:
- Before flower formation, but only in case of lack of natural rainfall.
- During the formation of the ovaries.
- After harvesting all fruits.
Feeding raspberries The phenomenon is also three times: after thawing the soil, during flowering and after harvesting and pruning bushes.
Raspberry pruning is an important agricultural practice. Sick, weak, deformed or diseased, dry shoots are constantly removed. A double pruning method is used to form the crop. The first pruning occurs in the summer, carried out after harvest. The tops of branches that are too long (more than one and a half meters) are removed, which causes branching.
The next year in spring, the tops are cut off by 10-15 centimeters, which enhances the formation of side branches. The bush becomes lush and gives a lot of berries. The disadvantage of the technique is the thickening of plantings, so Phenomenon raspberries should be planted immediately, taking into account this feature.
Diseases and pests
Raspberry Phenomenon is famous for its resistance to the scourge of berries - raspberry gall midge, as well as to viral and fungal diseases. It is affected by the raspberry beetle and weevil, as well as the spider mite.To get rid of pests, it is necessary to treat the plantings with appropriate insecticides, as well as to carry out sanitary cleaning of the bushes and the entire plantation. It is necessary to remove dry branches and leaves, loosen and mulch the soil, water and fertilize the raspberries in time.
Harvest and storage of crops
Ripe raspberries of the Phenomenon variety are easily separated from the stalk, so it is not difficult to collect them. Harvesting is carried out by hand, for placement of berries it is better to choose low wide baskets with a flat bottom.
Fresh berries remain 3-5 days, during which they must be processed or sold. They handle transportation well. Store Phenomenon raspberries at a temperature not exceeding 3 degrees Celsius.
Raspberries are good for a variety of uses. Phenomenon berries can be eaten fresh, frozen, subjected to shock freezing to preserve the taste and useful properties, cook compotes, preserves, jams, marshmallows and marshmallows.
Raspberries frozen for the winter Phenomenon is a storehouse of vitamins and summer taste. They can be used as a filling for baking, making smoothies, compotes and other drinks. In dank and slushy weather, tea with honey and raspberries will help bring down the temperature.
Raspberry Phenomenon - an excellent unpretentious variety with tasty, large and he althy fruits.
