Planting tulips in bulbous baskets: how to do it yourself with video
The rules for planting tulips in bulb baskets do not differ from the requirements for sowing flowers in open ground. However, this method is considered more efficient. This is explained by the fact that planting in baskets eliminates the need to dig up the garden before the onset of cold weather in search of bulbs. This type of container is compact and makes planting flowers easier.
What are the benefits of planting tulips in bulb baskets?
Boxes for bulbs make growing plants much easier. This approach has the following advantages:
- when preparing for winter, it is enough to remove the containers from the ground and get planting material;
- plants grow in a predetermined area, and do not "spread" across the territory;
- costs are reduced, as soil is prepared for planting in a small volume;
- rodents are unable to penetrate the roots of tulips.
The main disadvantage of this growing method is that with uneven planting, adult tulips become “crowded” in the basket.
Not all gardeners use these containers. This is due to the fact that the baskets, protruding partially above the soil surface, spoil the appearance of the flower bed.
Preparing for landing
Before planting tulips, you need to choose suitable containers that can withstand soil pressure, and soil mixture.
Date of planting
Gardeners recommend planting bulbs in autumn (September-October). During the winter, tulips gain enough strength and take root well.
Capacity selection
The size of the container should match the grower's needs. If you plan to plant several tulips in a limited area, it is recommended to take wide baskets.
For germinating flowers, any plastic boxes with sufficiently thick walls are suitable. Gardening stores sell specialized containers made for planting bulbs or vegetables. Such boxes have holes that exclude waterlogging of the soil.
What should the soil be like?
Tulips grow well in loose and moist soil with sufficient micronutrients. For the germination of flowers, it is recommended to purchase ready-made soil in which there are no pests.Before planting the plant in normal soil, it is necessary to mix the initial material with humus (not manure), coconut fiber, perlite and perculite. Feeding should be introduced in small quantities. Sand is used to create drainage.
Loosening the soil is a mandatory step that ensures the normal rooting of tulips. Dense soil does not allow oxygen to pass through, which is why the plant dies.
Preparing bulbs
Before planting, the bulbs must be inspected and discarded with external defects. Rot and infection quickly spread throughout the plants in the flower bed, affecting all flowers.
In order to prevent infection, it is recommended to treat the bulbs with Fitosporin. You can also use other specialized preparations (fungicides and others) that are sold in flower shops for this.
How to plant tulips in baskets?
Unlike the traditional planting of tulips in the ground, the use of baskets significantly expands the gardener's possibilities, allowing the latter to form original flower arrangements on the site. In this case, you must follow the rules of sowing.
The bulbs must be buried 9-10 centimeters into warm soil (temperature - at least 9 degrees), and the distance between the holes should be 10 centimeters.
Traditional fit
To plant tulips in a basket, you need to make a recess in the area, the dimensions of which are slightly larger than the dimensions of the box. Having lowered the container into the ground, it is necessary to add a small amount of sand, put the bulbs on the bottom and cover with prepared soil.
Tiered fit
For multi-level planting, it is recommended to purchase round-shaped baskets. To organize such a flower bed, prepared soil is first poured onto the bottom of the container, and large bulbs are laid out.Then a layer of soil is covered. Small bulbs are laid out on top of the soil. At the end, earth is poured into the basket up to the top edge.
A hole is dug in the area, the dimensions of which are suitable for the selected basket. In this case, the container should protrude 5 centimeters above the ground.
The convenience of multi-level planting is that the bulbs do not need to be dug up for the winter. The plant in this arrangement tolerates cold well.
Landing in the middle of a green lawn
The landing technology in this way is no different from the previous ones. First, a piece of lawn is removed on the site, the size of which corresponds to the dimensions of the basket. Next, the soil is removed, the soil is loosened and the container is deepened. After that, earth is poured into the basket with tulips. The bulbs at the end are moistened with sufficient water, and the removed lawn is returned to its place.
Planting patterns
This method of disembarkation requires preparation. First, markings are applied on the site using pegs and ropes, according to which baskets with tulips will be located in the future. After that, the lawn is removed, and the rest of the manipulations described above are performed.
Further care
Tulips require a sufficient supply of water. It is recommended to moisten the soil evenly, avoiding waterlogging. After each watering, it is necessary to loosen the soil and remove weeds near the flower. In the spring, nitrogen fertilizers should be applied to the soil, also following the dosage. Abundant top dressing increases the acidity of the soil, which leads to infection of the plant. During the budding period, fertilizers containing potassium and phosphorus are introduced into the soil.
How to make a DIY tulip basket?
In order to reduce the costs associated with planting plants on the site, you can replace the purchased containers with a 5 liter plastic bottle. This container is suitable for sowing a small number of bulbs.
To make a basket for tulips, just follow these steps:
- Take a plastic bottle and a knife (recommended stationery).
- Cut off one of the side walls.
- Cut out equilateral rectangles on the second wall.
- Cut similar holes in a checkerboard pattern at the bottom.
After that, you can plant the bulbs in an impromptu basket, following the rules described above.
What can replace bulb baskets?
In addition to plastic bottles, bulb baskets can replace:
- Grids. Such bags (string bags) are laid out along the walls of the pit prepared on the site, after which sand is poured and tulips are buried. In summer, when the plant fades, the nets can be easily pulled out of the ground by collecting all the bulbs.
- Box for vegetables. This option is not recommended. Vegetable boxes are large. Therefore, such containers are usually used for multi-level planting.
Planting tulips in baskets is a convenient and practical way to grow flowers in your garden.
