Beets are used not just as a food product, but as a medicine. It competes even with foreign expensive vitamin complexes. The root crop is grown throughout the territory of the former USSR. Every year summer residents and professional farmers are attracted by new varieties and hybrids. One of the noteworthy today is Wodan beetroot f1.

Variety description

The characteristic of the variety allows us to classify it as an early type. It takes up to 90 days from the moment of emergence of shoots to harvest. The leaves have a rich color, the rosette is well developed.Beetroot has a rounded shape, the flesh is colored maroon. The skin is thin and smooth. All root crops grow the same size.

The pulp is juicy, there are no rings, the density is high. The taste qualities are excellent. It has a subtle beetroot aroma. The content of nutrients and trace elements is very high.

Growing

Description of the variety says that before sowing, beetroot seeds of the Wodan variety cannot be soaked. They have been pre-treated with a fungicide to prevent the development of fungal diseases. Nematodes and other similar pests will not bother this beet.

Wodan from one seed is capable of producing several sprouts. If you want to get larger heads, then the weaker sprout is removed. This will not affect the yield in any way. Seeds are sown in open ground when the temperature outside stabilizes at + 12-15 ° C.On the selected site, grooves are made up to 3 cm deep. Between the rows, a distance of about half a meter is made. Plants must have enough sunlight, otherwise they will noticeably slow down growth.

Features of care

One of the peculiarities of caring for Wodan beets is that the beds should be watered at least once a week After that, the soil is loosened and the emerging weeds are removed. Due to untimely weeding, a deficiency of moisture and nutrients may occur. And at the wrong time, weeds harvested are quite capable of attracting a lot of pests to the site.

Mulching beet beds brings a positive result. For these purposes, last year's hay or mowed grass is used. Dried vegetation not only prevents excessive evaporation of moisture, but also prevents weeds from breaking through. And when the bottom layer rots, additional nutrients enter the soil.

Pros and cons

Vodan beetroot has much more advantages than disadvantages. They belong to:

  • undemanding when growing and caring;
  • lack of shooting;
  • suitability for long-term storage without loss of taste and commercial qualities;
  • high palatability;
  • large root crops.

Among the shortcomings, it is worth highlighting the fact that the beet variety Vodan from one seed is capable of producing several sprouts. Subsequently, planting requires thinning and removal of a weak sprout. Otherwise, the roots will grow small.

Pests and diseases

Vodan f1 beetroot shows increased resistance to the most common diseases. However, young shoots are affected by the root beetle. It is most often found on heavy soils and in lowlands. The stem of the affected plant becomes thinner, rots and dies.

In order to prevent the soil should be loosened regularly, to prevent the formation of a crust. In autumn, acidic soil is limed. Crop rotation rules must be followed.

Harvest and storage of crops

Vodan beetroot is harvested as the roots grow. But technical ripeness occurs 90 days after germination. A month before the proposed harvesting of the beds, watering the plants is completely stopped. They take out the heads from the soil with a pitchfork or simply pull them out by the tops. Choose a dry fine day for cleaning.

After digging, the Wodan beets are left for a short time in the sun to dry. Further, the heads are cleaned of soil residues, the tops are cut off and sent for storage in a cool dark room. The ideal place would be a basement with moderate humidity.

Reviews of gardeners

Reviews of practicing gardeners about Wodan beets are mostly positive.It is noted that with low labor and material costs, it was possible to get good harvests. Insignificant shortcomings were subsequently compensated by the collected root crops of excellent quality. Here are some real reviews of our summer residents.

Maria Afanasyevna, pensioner: “I have been gardening for a long time. Every year I grow my beets in the country, we don’t buy them for the winter. A couple of years ago I bought the seeds of the Wodan f1 variety and was very pleased. Plants proved to be resistant to diseases, it was not necessary to do additional treatments. The fruits grew medium in size, but tasty, without rings and veins, beautiful beetroot color. I will definitely grow this variety again.”

Igor Viktorovich, novice summer resident: “Recently, my family and I bought a summer cottage and decided to grow organic vegetables and fruits there. In the store, the seller advised me to try the Wodan f1 beet variety.We trusted her opinion and agreed. I confess, I did not have to regret. The harvest was good, with high taste and commercial qualities. Only the neighbor said late that it was necessary to remove the additional weak shoots that formed some of the seeds. Because of this, the heads grew small. But for the first experiment, the result is excellent, we will definitely grow this variety next season.”

Irina Gennadievna, village resident: “In the village, everyone tries to provide himself with vegetables from his own garden. We grew beets all the time. A few years ago, a salesperson recommended that we try the new Wodan f1. I am suspicious of hybrids, but I dared to experiment. Now I confess that not in vain. I collected an excellent harvest of delicious root crops, the family was satisfied. While I do not plan to change this variety, I will definitely allocate a place of honor for it on my site.”
