How much does a goat weigh: a table of averages and how to determine without weights

Goat farming is gaining more and more popularity. Proper and competent maintenance of animals allows you to get valuable products. Milk and goat meat are considered dietary products and are used in the preparation of baby food rations. In order to calculate the correct diet, farmers need to control the body weight of the animals. But how to find out exactly how much a goat weighs, without using weights, we'll figure it out further.

Factors affecting goat weight

The size of livestock depends on many reasons. First of all, the breed, age and general he alth of the animals are taken into account. But even in this case, the calculations will be approximate, because kids are born of different sizes, and their further development also happens in different ways.

The most common breed of dairy goats by the time they grow up is gaining carcass weight up to 50 kilograms. But there are varieties of pets that exceed the mark of 80-90 kilograms. Accordingly, the development of babies in these breeds occurs according to different criteria. To find out the monthly weight gain, animals are weighed or measured based on specially compiled tables. Being underweight or overweight is a sign of poor diet, serious illness or injury that increases the risk of animal death.

Important! To determine the weight, measurement methods and tables have been developed based on the parameters and age of the animals.

Determination methods

Special scales are most suitable for accurately determining the weight of the carcass of livestock. But such devices are expensive, not every farmer or private trader can afford to purchase such a luxury for a personal household.

The body weight of pets changes during the day. Goats are weighed several times a day to get an average. For this, improvised means are used. If kids are weighed using household scales or steelyards, then adult animals are measured to determine body weight.

Interesting! In large farms, experienced livestock breeders determine the dimensions of animals without resorting to weighing and measuring. Many years of experience with livestock allows you to determine the weight by eye.

Tables for determining weight

The quickest and easiest way to find out how livestock fit the parameters is to use tables already compiled based on the experience and practice of professional cattlemen.

By age

You can calculate the approximate weight of a pet carcass based on age. On average, an adult should weigh between 40 and 60 kilograms. But such calculations should not be used for serious illnesses and injuries of animals.

Depending on the breed, a pet at the age of one year can weigh from 20 to 40 kilograms. On average, the body weight of a one-year-old dairy goat is measured in the range of 25-28 kilograms. At the age of 2, the animal is gaining growth almost twice. After the third year of growth and development, weight gain is sharply reduced and ranges from 2 to 6 kilograms annually.

Chest circumference

You can determine the weight of livestock without scales by the chest circumference of the animals.

Important! To measure the chest, a flexible tape measure or tape is used, which is applied behind the front limbs of the animal and directed upwards.

Based on the ratio of bust to body circumference

A more accurate method for determining the carcass weight of a domestic goat is to add the pet's chest girth to its body length.

How to measure the volume of the chest, described above. The length of the animal's body is measured from the point on the chest, located above the front legs, to the point under the tail. Both parameters are added together and get a figure corresponding to the weight of the animal according to the table below. 1 year

It must be remembered that such measurements cannot be compared with the exact measurement of animal body weight on special scales. But even large-scale farms use these methods to calculate the daily diet and monitor the he alth of livestock.
