Horned beehive: drawings and dimensions, how to do it at home with your own hands

Beekeeping is developing, there are new techniques for caring for insects, forms of building houses. Horned hives are considered novelties in breeding bees. The inventor of the new design was Mikhail Palivoda. It is useful for beekeepers to familiarize themselves with the features of this family breeding format, advantages and disadvantages. In addition, such a hive can be assembled independently if you study the drawings and recommendations of the masters.

Design Features

This option differs from the usual bee dwellings in the following ways:

  • the weight of the structure is lower than usual - the mass of the bee hive together with the collected honey is no more than 16 kg;
  • standard frame format for housing - 14.5 cm, which allows you to purchase and use conventional tools for the formation of layers and the growth of beekeeping;
  • obligatory constructive element - Henemann lattices (help to keep the brood during honey extraction);

  • horned-type bee dwelling - a multi-hull version of the hive.

Attention! An interesting design solution by Mikhail Palivod is the use of a small-caliber grate on the bottom wall of the house. This ensures sufficient ventilation of the hive during the period of active honey collection.

Pros and cons

Each design has positive and negative sides. Benefits of stag hives:

  • light weight (the beekeeper can handle the house without extra help);
  • easy to assemble at home according to simple drawings (assembly is available even for beginner beekeepers);
  • 10 standard size frames can be installed in one house;
  • for construction, you can use solid elements or the remains of wood from other works (debris, slats, etc.).

Attention! Bee houses of the horned type are considered universal for beginner beekeepers - lightweight, simple design, you can collect several elements into one object and gradually increase the number of insects in the apiary.

Pros and cons are best revealed after practical use - details in the video.

Disadvantages are also present - bee houses are small, no more than 10 frames are placed in one hive. For beekeepers who have been working with honey for several years and have a large apiary, this can be a serious obstacle.

Requirements for materials

The main element of the future bee house is wood. For horned hives, it is recommended to choose the following breeds:

  • linden;
  • poplar;
  • willow.

Materials need to dry. Additional impregnation is not allowed - it is harmful to insects. If you want to reduce the cost of production, you need to take a lining. A metal grate with a maximum diameter of 3 mm is placed in the lower part.

Drawings and dimensions

Mikhail Palivoda developed drawings and prescribed certain dimensions for assembling stag hives at home.

Beekeepers need to consider the following parameters:

  • the main element of the bee house is the body, the height for which in this case should be 15.3 cm;
  • side details - a width of 53.5 cm is considered suitable. Attention! It is important to take into account additional protrusions for connecting parts. An indent of 1.6 cm is left to the walls, 4 cm are stored on the indents of the outer part, 0.5 cm is laid when installing the front and rear parts;
  • boards installed in front and behind should be 40 cm wide, also lay 0.8 cm on the folds;
  • the lower part - the bottom - is calculated according to the width of the walls of the bee house for 10 frames (in addition, a re-mesh bottom is installed for garbage collection);
  • “horns” (hence the name) are fixed to the external elements with a length of 15 cm, a protrusion of 1.5 cm should be obtained at the top.
Before starting the assembly, you need to check the availability of inventory and tools, ensure a flat surface and a clean table. The traditional bee house according to the technique of Mikhail Palivod is assembled into 8 frames, each 2.2 cm thick.

How to make a horned beehive with your own hands at home

The advantage of stag hives is that such multi-hull dwellings can be assembled independently, without having to spend money on expensive materials. Sequence of actions:

  • determine the number of future houses and the desired number of frames (8 or 10);
  • prepare the workplace, the necessary materials and tools;
  • outline dimensions on wooden blanks, cut out the required number of parts;
  • assemble the parts in a convenient way (with a screwdriver or nails).

Attention! When cutting parts, it is important to leave gaps for assembly (indicated in dimensions). Otherwise, the bee house will turn out to be smaller in size, and the selected frames will not fit in quantity or number.

The information is visually presented in the following video.

Beekeepers need to learn a lot of information, tips and instructions. Therefore, it is recommended to start with simple options. These include the acquisition of horned hives for the apiary. Small, light, you can assemble yourself at home from improvised materials - ideal for any beekeeper.
