Arrowing winter varieties of garlic are especially popular. The convenience lies in the fact that they are planted before winter and in the spring, at the height of the planting season, precious time is saved. Petrovsky's garlic is a mid-season variety with excellent commodity and taste characteristics.

Variety description

Petrovsky - a variety of garlic for universal use with medium ripening. Arrow type, used for planting before winter.Differs in high rates of productivity, it is well stored. The heads are flat and the same size. The mass of one of them reaches 75 grams. 6-8 cloves are formed on each bulb.

The taste of Petrovsky's garlic is excellent, the sharpness is strong. Dry scales acquire a grayish color with purple stripes. The pulp is dense, at the stage of technical ripeness it has a light brown color.

Growing

Domestic gardeners have accumulated a lot of experience on how and where it is better to grow garlic arrows Petrovsky. The description of the variety recommends choosing fertile soil for these purposes with a sufficient amount of nutrients and fertilizers. The ideal option would be soil with a neutral level of acidity. The bed should be located in a sunny and dry place.

Planting garlic Petrovsky before winter begins at least a couple of weeks, and preferably a month before the onset of frost. The teeth must be able to take root, otherwise they will not overwinter. Grooves up to 8 cm deep are made in the garden. The distance between the rows is 25 cm. The teeth are planted at a distance of 9 cm from each other. A couple of weeks after planting, the beds are mulched.

Features of care

In the spring, when the first shoots of Petrovsky garlic appear on the garden, the first weeding is carried out. Irrigation of the site begins in May, and ends by the end of June or the beginning of July. A couple of weeks before the expected harvest, watering is completely stopped.

During the formation of the third leaf, Petrovsky's garlic is fertilized with urea. After a couple of weeks, nitroammofoska is added. At the end of June, when the plant forms a head, the final feeding is carried out with superphosphate.

Pros and cons

Petrovsky's garlic variety has a lot of advantages that distinguish it from its competitors. Among them:

  • universal variety;
  • large head;
  • great spicy taste;
  • high yield;
  • heads of the same size;
  • resistance to major diseases;
  • suitability for long-term storage and transportation.

Petrovsky has no significant shortcomings, but some gardeners believe that he is quite demanding on care and growing conditions, if not observed, yields may suffer.

Pests and diseases

Despite the fact that Petrovsky shows increased resistance to the main types of diseases and pests, some of them can cause trouble for gardeners. Garlic is affected by the same pests as onions.

In most cases, for prevention, before planting, the beds are dug as deep as possible and in no case are plants planted in one place for several years in a row. Dry ash should be scattered between rows.

To prevent pests and diseases of garlic, tobacco dust is effectively used, which is dusted with plants after rain or dew. They also prepare an infusion of mustard powder or a decoction of hot peppers.

Harvest and storage of crops

According to popular belief, they try to remove the garlic before the feast of Peter and Paul, which falls on July 12th. Variety Petrovsky can be harvested at the moment when 3 leaves turn yellow on the plants. You should not do this before, as unripe heads will not be stored well. And garlic overexposed in the garden, when dug up, crumbles and is easily injured, which also does not have the best effect on further preservation.

They try to use the Petrovsky harvest before the beginning of January. Further, the teeth will lose their commercial and taste qualities. Garlic should be stored in a dark, cool room with medium or low humidity.

Reviews of gardeners

Petrovsky garlic has long taken root in the beds of summer residents and farmers' fields. They managed to accumulate some experience and knowledge on its cultivation and are happy to share their feedback about this culture.

Antonina Fedorovna, summer resident with experience: “Petrovsky's garlic variety was brought to my dacha by my son. He loves spicy varieties, so a friend recommended that Petrovsky try it and gave him several heads for breeding. To be honest, I didn’t pay much attention to this crop, because my harvest didn’t set any records. But the whole season, my family and I ate our garlic with pleasure and made small supplies for the winter. Now all the time I allocate a place on the site for this variety.

Valentin Pavlovich, farmer: “I grow Petrovsky garlic because the crop is the same size, with good commercial and taste qualities. In addition, this variety keeps well. In my case, these issues are a priority, and I am even ready to turn a blind eye to the exactingness of plants for care and timely fertilization.”

Olga Sergeevna, owner of a private plot: “We plant several varieties of garlic with different ripening periods. Our family loves spicy dishes, so Petrovsky immediately attracted attention. For the first time, a neighbor in the plot gave it to us for testing, but she made a reservation that in order to get the maximum yield, she would have to work hard. I followed all the recommendations, weeded the beds, fertilized and watered. The result turned out to be a success. I was pleasantly surprised that the harvest was preserved almost until March. This does not happen even with every late variety.Now Petrovsky has become our favorite variety, and we will definitely plant it next season.”

Angelika Anatolyevna, summer resident: “I plant garlic for my needs all the time. I don’t pay much attention to varieties, I buy seed in the store. Once I came across a Petrovsky variety, which was recommended to be planted before winter. Unfortunately, in the autumn I ended up in the hospital and did not have time to plant my teeth in the garden before the onset of frost. Disappointed, I decided to try to save my garlic until spring and plant it with the onset of heat. I don’t even know if this is the norm or an exception, but my Petrovsky gave a good harvest. Before that, I could not achieve such indicators even when planting cloves before winter. I was pleasantly surprised and now I try to constantly buy this variety.”
