Among gardeners, the Arcadia grape variety is very popular. And no wonder. After all, the vine is unpretentious, from year to year it pleases with a harvest of fragrant sweet berries and has a good immunity to many diseases of the culture. When planning to plant this variety on your site, you should first familiarize yourself with the features of the cultivation of this crop and its advantages and disadvantages.

History of variety selection

This variety was bred at the Odessa Scientific Institute named after Tairov. Two varieties were taken as a basis - Moldova and Cardinal. As a result of breeding work, it was possible to obtain a variety that took all the best characteristics of the source material.

Thanks to Moldova, Arcadia has good adaptive characteristics, the seedling quickly takes root in a new place and is resistant to changes in climatic conditions. He is not afraid of temperature changes, as well as return spring frosts.

And the Cardinal gave Arcadia high taste qualities of berries, stable fruiting and resistance to the most common diseases of the vine.

Interestingly, despite the fact that the parent varieties have dark blue and purple berries, Arcadia's berries are light yellow.

Description of Arcadia grapes

By studying the description of the Arcadia variety, you can decide whether it is suitable for growing in a particular area:

  • Large berries with proper agricultural practices grow up to 12 grams in weight.
  • The bush itself is vigorous with large strong shoots.
  • The leaves have a slight pubescence, the shape is broad-lobed.
  • The weight of one bunch of grapes reaches 750 grams, the structure of the brush is dense.
  • The grapes are sweetish, have a nutmeg aftertaste and a bright aroma.
  • Suitable for growing both large farms and small garden plots.

Distinguishing Features

The Arcadia variety compares favorably with other grapevine varieties due to the following technical characteristics:

  1. Because both male and female flowers bloom on the vine, there is no need to plant pollinators. Moreover, Arcadia itself is a pollinator for other crop varieties.
  2. With proper care, up to 18-25 kg of berries can be harvested from each bush during the season.
  3. Without additional shelter, Arcadia grapes can withstand frosts down to -20 degrees, at lower temperatures it is worth taking care of the winter shelter of the vine.
  4. Sugar content of berries is in the range of 16-17%.
  5. Tolerates long-distance transportation without problems, making it popular with farmers who grow grapes for sale.
  6. Juice, wine, jam are made from Arcadia.

Pros and cons

The crop has several advantages and disadvantages that must be considered when growing a variety.

The undeniable advantages of gardeners include:

  1. Friendly, simultaneous maturation of all brushes.
  2. Stable fruiting and yield.
  3. Quick adaptation to the place of planting and cultivation, high frost resistance.
  4. Early ripening.
  5. The versatility of using Arcadia berries.
  6. The first harvest is taken from the vine already in the 3rd year after planting on the site.

But there are also disadvantages that you need to pay attention to in order to get the declared yield:

  1. The vine does not tolerate high humidity and does not like the proximity of groundwater.
  2. Cold winds and drafty planting significantly reduce yields.
  3. Lack of sunlight and heat leads to a deterioration in the taste characteristics of berries.
  4. Requires pruning, otherwise the berries ripen small and sour.

Ripening dates

Another advantage of the variety gardeners call the timing of ripening berries. The crop can be harvested 110 days after the appearance of the ovary. In different regions, the dates are different, which directly depends on climatic conditions and weather.

Boarding rules

The survival rate of the seedling and future harvests depend on the correct planting. For placement, choose a place on the sunny side of the site, preferably near the wall of the building, to protect the seedling from a draft.

Decomposed organic matter and mineral supplements are introduced into the planting pit. Water abundantly and mulch the ground around the bush.

Features of care

Vine care is standard: pruning, fertilizing (potassium and phosphorus in spring, organics in autumn), regular watering, especially in dry summers, and prevention of diseases and pests.

Methods of propagation of the variety

To preserve varietal characteristics, Arcadia is propagated by cuttings. Another way in which the vine comes into fruition earlier is by grafting onto another bush. Experienced gardeners advise doing it in a split.

About diseases and pests

To prevent the occurrence of diseases and pests, preventive treatments are carried out with fungicides and insecticides in spring and autumn. For these purposes, use "Nitrafen", ferrous sulfate 3% concentration or a solution of Bordeaux liquid.
