Diarrhea in goslings: how to treat and cause, medicines and folk remedies
Even subject to the rules of keeping, poultry is confirmed to various diseases. Among the common pathologies detected in goslings is diarrhea. This disorder in some cases occurs due to serious diseases. Therefore, it is important to first determine the type of diarrhea in goslings, then how to treat the pathology. Otherwise, deaths are possible.
Main causes of illness
Goslings have the following types of diarrhea:
- white - due to Salmonella contamination;
- green with foam - develops with colibacillosis;
- combination of diarrhea and nasal discharge - characteristic of pasteurellosis.
Infection of young animals occurs against the background of weakened immunity. This leads to non-compliance with the rules for keeping birds. The following factors can provoke diarrhea:
- drafts;
- lack of ventilation;
- high humidity;
- temperature fluctuations;
- vaccination refusal;
- non-compliance with sanitary standards inside the poultry house.
Also, improper feeding and vitamin deficiency lead to infection of young animals.
Common symptoms of diarrhea in goslings
The greatest danger to offspring is the infectious disease pullorosis, in which white diarrhea is observed. The course of this pathology is accompanied by the spread of the inflammatory process to the liver, spleen and other organs.In the absence of timely treatment of pullorosis, birds will die.
In addition to white litter, the following symptoms are characteristic of this disease:
- permanently open beak;
- lowered wings;
- sluggishness;
- lack of appetite;
- glued fluff around the anus;
- discoordination;
- legs wide apart (due to joint inflammation).
The first symptoms of pullorosis are often observed 1 day after infection. Green litter appears with colibacillosis. The course of this pathology is accompanied by the following symptoms:
- lack of appetite;
- high body temperature;
- general weakness;
- decrease in activity;
- heavy water consumption.
Pasteurellosis causes diarrhea and nasal discharge at the same time. The course of this disease is characterized by the following symptoms:
- goslings hide their heads under their wings;
- rapid breathing with severe wheezing;
- loose stools with spotting;
- slackness, low activity.
In immunocompromised birds, pasteurellosis causes sudden death. In the case of an acute course of this pathology, a rise in body temperature to 43 degrees is possible. During this period, the bird begins to drink heavily.
Diagnosing the problem
A preliminary diagnosis is made on the basis of collecting information about the nature of the pathology. But to identify the pathogen, a comprehensive examination of the poultry house and dead goslings is carried out, and tests are also taken.
How to treat diarrhea in goslings
Infectious diseases that cause diarrhea are treated with medication. Without drugs, the whole bird will die out. In the treatment of pullorosis, which provokes white diarrhea, 1% Sulfadimezin or Furazolidone is used. Both drugs are added to food or water for two weeks.
At the end of the specified period, the bird must rest for 3 days, after which a second course of treatment is carried out.
Green diarrhea therapy helps:
- "Biomyetsin" in combination with "Tetracycline";
- "Neomethycin";
- "Levomycetin";
- Baytril.
The dosage of these drugs is calculated based on the weight of the bird. The type of medicine should be selected by a veterinarian.
In the treatment of pasteurellosis help:
- "Levomycetin" on fish oil;
- "Sulfadimezin".
The dosage and type of medication used is also determined by the doctor. To speed up the recovery of the affected bird, it is recommended to change the daily diet. On the first day after the onset of the disease, goslings should be given bran or tobacco ash. Additionally, ground barley, boiled eggs, oats, grated carrots and small greens mixed with milk should be included in the diet.
If diarrhea is caused by helminthic invasion, then antiparasitic drugs are used as part of the therapy. Such medicines are added to food in powdered form.
If loose stools are caused by hypothermia, the house temperature needs to be raised. He althy goslings in such conditions are restored within three days. To speed up recovery, it is recommended to give the bird a weak solution of potassium. Folk remedies in the treatment of infectious diseases in poultry are not used. In the therapy of adults, vodka is often used. But goslings can die when drinking alcohol.
Prevention of diarrhea
The basis for the prevention of diarrhea is compliance with the rules for keeping goslings. For this you need:
- clean rooms regularly;
- exclude drafts and contact with rodents;
- change bedding in time;
- do not allow the temperature to drop to the minimum allowable values;
- Keep juveniles separate from adults;
- isolate infected goslings from he althy ones.
In front of the poultry house, it is recommended to lay a mat soaked in a disinfectant solution. Thus, the infection from the shoes will not penetrate into the room. You should also conduct a preventive examination of the bird to identify signs of infection and vaccinate goslings.
During the first month of life, it is recommended to dilute a weak solution of potassium permanganate in drinking water. In addition, young animals need to be given vitamin complexes in a dosage appropriate for their age.
