For Siberia, breeders have created tomatoes that are grown in open ground. Varieties such as the Velvet Season tomato are successfully cultivated in harsh weather conditions. Even in this climatic zone, there is an opportunity not only to grow, but also to get high yields.

Breeders are looking for new opportunities to create tomato varieties with decent performance for this type of vegetable. Their work has made it possible for vegetable growers to get their crops in risky farming areas.

The main direction of creating such varieties is aimed at breeding early and undersized species. Some of the tomatoes they have bred are suitable both for the north and for planting in the south of the country.

Descriptive characteristics of the variety

Velvet season tomatoes are mid-early tomatoes. It is distinguished by low bushes (determinants of the variety) and is suitable both for growing in open beds and under film shelters. The height of adult bushes is approximately 50-70 cm.

The characteristic and description of the variety includes information about the fruits. They are fleshy and deep red in color. Their shape is rounded with a slightly elongated bottom. One tomato may weigh 300g, but most weigh 100g.

The pulp has an increased sugar content, and when biting, its density and tenderness are felt. Due to their elastic structure, they can be stored for a long time. When grown, these plants are resistant to skin cracking.

This type of tomato is intended for:

  • for fresh use,
  • for s alting.

Well preserved whole. The dense skin is resistant to cracking after pouring them with hot water during preservation.

When squeezing the juice from these tomatoes, a puree-like mass is obtained, therefore, Velvet Season tomatoes are practically not used for this purpose.

Issues of planting tomatoes

Weather conditions have a minimal effect on obtaining an excellent harvest. As a rule, velvet tomatoes have a stable yield. Subject to agrotechnological requirements, as well as regular feeding, you can get up to 5-7 kg of vegetables of this variety from 1m2.

Sowing seeds of this variety begins 50-60 days before the optimum temperature for planting seedlings in open ground.Cultivation of seeds is carried out in a room with a temperature of about 23-25 ⁰С. Tomatoes are planted in open beds after the soil has warmed up to 15 degrees.

To ensure fast and friendly shoots, you can pre-treat the seed material with ready-made products to stimulate their growth.

The variety has resistance to typical diseases that can affect these vegetables. Early ripening of fruits protects them from late blight.

Alexander, 58 years old: “It turned out that some Velvet season tomato bushes grew higher than the description claims and I had to try to tie them to pegs as they grew. All the bushes bore excellent fruit. The fruits grew large and tasty. They have an almost rounded shape and increased meatiness. The higher the fruits were tied on the bushes, the larger they turned out. Very suitable for salads. Liked their disease resistance.”
