Hook pine is a type of mountain conifer that is planted in the garden as a stunted plant. It is often used to decorate discounts, lawns, house adjoining territories. The plant got its name due to the presence of thick, irregularly curved branches. They do not grow randomly, but twist the crown into a fluffy ball of the correct shape. Tree description
Hook pine is a tree of compact size, but sometimes it can reach 20 meters in height.This culture is distinguished by a dense dark green crown in the form of a narrow cone. Old specimens have a slightly spreading crown. In this case, the ends of all branches are directed upwards.
The tree has a straight trunk. In young plants, it is covered with a dull, wrinkled bark. In adulthood, thick grooves appear on it, which form almost rectangular plates.
Needles of a tree reach a length of 3.5-4 centimeters. Moreover, their thickness is 1.3 mm. The needles are arranged in pairs. It is very tough and prickly and has a rich dark green hue. Male spikelets are distinguished by a hard color and are located near the bases of new shoots. The female cones have a short pedicel and grow on branches. At first, they have a spherical shape and a purple-red hue. After pollination, the buds turn green and take on a pointed ovoid shape.
Distribution area
The plant has become widespread in different regions. It is found in the Central and Western Alps. Also, the distribution area includes the Pyrenees, the Vosges, the Massif Central, the Black Forest, Djura.
Conditions for tree growth
Hook pine is considered a hardy plant. However, young crops are best mulched and sheltered for the winter. Mature plants are able to withstand temperatures as low as -40 degrees.
Culture is considered undemanding to the composition of the soil. However, it does not tolerate moisture stagnation. Therefore, when planting a plant, it is important to provide high-quality drainage. When choosing a place for culture, preference should be given to sunny areas or partial shade. At the same time, the humidity should be low.
